When Should You Replace a Slatted Frame? Lifespan & Warning Signs
Rule of thumb: every 7–10 years. But high-quality models last 15–20 years. Which warning signs indicate it's time for a replacement and when repair is enough.

How long does a slatted frame last?
The lifespan of a slatted frame depends heavily on quality and usage. As a rule of thumb: a slatted frame should be checked every 7 to 10 years and replaced if necessary. However, high-quality models can last 15 to 20 years or even longer.
It's worth noting that while mattresses typically need replacing after about 10 years, slatted frames have a longer lifespan of up to 20 years.
Warning signs: When the slatted frame should be replaced
The condition matters more than the age. The following signs indicate that a replacement or repair is due:
- Sagging: The slatted frame bows downward and no longer springs back
- Broken slats: One or more sprung wooden slats are broken
- Creaking noises: The slatted frame cracks or creaks during movement
- Decreasing comfort: The sleeping feel becomes uncomfortable or hard
- Material wear: End caps or sliders are brittle or broken
Repair or buy new?
If only individual slats are defective, a repair is significantly cheaper than buying new. A broken sprung wooden slat cannot be glued back together – it must be replaced. Replacing individual slats costs only a fraction of a new slatted frame and extends its lifespan by many years.
However, if the frame itself is damaged, the slatted frame has sagged severely, or a large number of slats are broken, buying a new one is the more economical solution.
Lifespan in motorhomes and caravans
In motorhomes and caravans, slatted frames are exposed to particular stresses: vibrations while driving, fluctuating humidity, and often non-standard sizes. Regular inspection is especially important here. Since motorhome beds frequently have custom dimensions that aren't available through standard retail, replacing individual parts with custom-made slats is often the only practical solution.
Checklist: How to inspect your slatted frame
- Remove the mattress and inspect the slatted frame from above
- Check for sagging or broken slats
- Test the slats' flexibility by pressing on them
- Inspect end caps and sliders for damage
- Check the frame for cracks or warping
- Listen for creaking noises when weight is applied
