Measuring Sprung Wooden Slats Correctly – Step by Step

Measure length, width and thickness correctly – so the replacement slat fits perfectly. The most important measurements and what to watch out for.

Why Correct Measuring Is Crucial

A sprung wooden slat that is even a few millimeters too short or too long won't fit in the frame: if it's too short, it won't click into place; if it's too long, it can't be installed. Precise measuring is therefore the key to a successful repair.

Step 1: Measuring the Length

Measure the slat from edge to edge – meaning the bare wooden slat without the attached end caps and without the curvature. Note the result in millimeters (e.g. 820 mm). Feel free to measure twice to be sure.

Tip: If all slats are already broken or removed, measure the inner distance of the frame between the cap holders and subtract approx. 2–3 mm for the locking clearance.

Step 2: Determining the Width

The common widths for sprung wooden slats are 25, 35, 40, 50, 53, 55 and 63 mm. Measure an intact slat crosswise with a ruler or caliper. In motorhomes and caravans, widths of 25 mm and 35 mm are also common, while in household applications 53 mm and 68 mm dominate.

If all slats are damaged, check the underside of the frame – a model designation is often stamped or glued there.

Step 3: Determining the Thickness (Height)

Slatted frames up to 100 cm wide usually have a thickness of 8 mm. For slatted frames wider than 100 cm, a thickness of 12 mm is standard. Measure the height of the slat in cross-section to confirm.

Step 4: Checking End Caps and Sliders

Before ordering new slats, check whether the end caps are still intact. Caps hold the sprung wooden slats in the frame. If a cap is missing or damaged, you can find the right replacement using our Cap Finder.

Custom Sizes and Made-to-Measure Slats

Do you need a size that isn't available in the standard range? In the Configurator you can freely choose length and width. Depending on the thickness, the maximum length is up to 999 mm for 8 mm thickness and up to 1,170 mm for 10 mm and 12 mm thickness. Longer slats are available upon request.
